Smalltown Lore: PEI Folklore & History

Springfield School #12

Bob and Toni Vary purchased a three acre property in 2017 just outside O'Leary. Included in the purchase was a little old forgotten one room schoolhouse, nestled between a potato warehouse and some old barns.

Springfield School #12 was moved to its present location when the community determined the need for a larger 2 room school house to be built on its lot.

The little one room schoolhouse had opened in the 1880's and closed in 1947. A former student recalls the old boys’ and girls’ cloak rooms, upon each side of the main door, the teacher's desk raised on a platform, double desks for students, and the wood stove resting in the middle of the room. The janitor would arrive early to start the fire up in the stove during the cold winter mornings. The wood for the stove was provided by the families of the students, times were hard, and money was scarce so they provided wood as a form of taxes.

When the Vary's acquired the schoolhouse it was being used as a granary and shed.

They have spent the last 7 years working tirelessly restoring the schoolhouse. The Vary's intend to turn each of the former cloak rooms into bedrooms, while designing the rest of the building into an open concept living space.

They document their journey on Facebook, under a group titled Old Schooling if you'd like to follow along on their adventure!
